Pittsfield High School Latin teacher, Mary Ann Nordell, has been named Word Street Teacher of the Month for March 2008. PHS Junior, Collin Slater, nominated Ms. Nordell and wrote:
"Mrs. Nordell is an entertaining and enthusiastic teacher. She does not like what she teaches, she is in love with what she teaches. Whether she is teaching French vocabulary to her freshmen, or translating Ovid with her AP students, Mrs. Nordell's exciting personality brings the material alive. She also will go above and beyond to make sure students understand the material in class and offers her free periods for students to have guided independent studies with her. Mrs. Nordell has inspired me to study the history of Roman architecture outside of class, which I then transferred to my work in ceramics class. I strongly believe that Mrs. Nordell should be honored for the work she has done as an educator."
In acknowledgment of Ms. Nordell's significant contribution to education in Pittsfield and Berkshire County, Word Street will award her a teacher's prize package, including a gift card to a local office supply or book seller, and The Berkshire Eagle will feature her in its pages.
Word Street intends to honor a different teacher each month of the school year. Nominations of teachers of any subject, in any grade level, 50-100 words in length, can be sent to wordstreet@wordstreet.org. Or students may send nominations by clicking on CONTACT in the menu above.
Nominations for April end on Monday, March 31.
